First Adidas makes a comeback, now… Champion? You heard us right, Champion is officially the hottest attire to sport right now (cue the flashbacks to Jay Z’s ‘90s closet). It’s a revival we should have seen coming, considering fashion’s love for all things vintage and ‘90s streetwear. Yet it’s still a shock that a nearly century-old sportswear brand made such an impressionable comeback. In case you missed it, we’ll give a brief recap on their iconic return, and share some of our favorite ways the brand is being styled in mainstream fashion.
The Return of the Century
Though Champion was founded in 1919, it was the ‘90s where they truly shined – leading the way in the ‘activewear as casual wear’ movement (a.k.a. athleisure). Their wide demographic reach—spanning from athletes to the hip hop community to skaters—placed them at the forefront of ‘90s fashion. The same could not be said for the early 2000s, where everyone thought Champion was destined to remain at bargain retailers. However, the nostalgia the brand provides to this decade lead Demna Gvasalia, founder of disruptive Paris-based fashion line Vetements (pronounced vet-mahn), to include Champion in the Vetements SS16 collection.
Using the iconic “Champion” script, they rotated the “C” 90 degrees to look like a “V”, spelling Vetements on a Champion brand sweatshirt. After getting wind of Vetements original use of the logo, Champion jumped on the opportunity for a collaboration in their upcoming collections (seen flaunted on the bodies of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, Selena Gomez and more) – and has since been found in mainstream retailers like Supreme, Urban Outfitters and PacSun. Not to mention, in the closets of celebs like Chance the Rapper, Kendrick Lamar and Hailey Baldwin.
Champion in Mainstream Fashion
From tracksuits, to crew neck hoodies, to shorts – each trendy retailer in mainstream fashion has found a way to bring their design aesthetic to the Champion material, without compromising the integrity of the brand. From rotating the logo to be vertical, to adding it down the sleeves of a sweatshirt, to going the simple route and selling as is – they all have their own unique feel.
